Homecoming Gang Rape in California

When I discovered this article, it made me feel deeply saddened and simultaneously disgusted. While many teenagers were inside their high school enjoying their homecoming dance, one young woman was being brutally assaulted and raped just outside. You hear similar stories of violence on the news, but what makes this one particularly disgusting is the ages that were involved, how many involved, and the lack of respectable humans that would help this young woman.

This happened just last weekend in Richmond, California. As the homecoming dance was underway at their high school, this young woman was being "gang raped in a two-and-a-half-hour long assault." Investigators involved in the case are claiming that at least 4 young men were involved in the gang rape and as many as 15 guys stood there and witnessed the assault and did absolutely nothing to help this poor girl. When she was finally discovered, they found her lying underneath a bench, she was flown to the hospital in critical condition. Since the assault the hospital has updated her condition to "stable." This story is so vivid and descriptive, that it plays out in your mind. It has literally disturbed me for days. It's incredibly disgusting to think about the crime itself, let alone think about the 15 men that just stood there, probably laughing and getting off on it.

Authorities have detained two suspects that were involved, and they are questioning a third male. I sincerely hope they get the maximum punishment for this crime. This young woman will phusically heal, but the permanent mental damage that has occured will haunt her for the rest of her life. She will always remember it and it will always negatively affect her life, in one way or another. I've been thinking a lot about the boys that were standing around watching the gang rape. What's going to happen to them? What should happen to them? Should their age be a deciding factor in their punishment? In my opinion, standing there and watching something so horrific and doing nothing to stop it is just as despicable. At that age, if they stand there and do nothing, they are a criminal in my eyes. I hope their age doesn't lessen any kind of punishment they receive.

A lead investigator in the case has said, "We have checked Facebook and YouTube to try to find any reveling evidence. We're looking in particular to see if anyone posted any video of the incident." I can't even imagine being that young woman, in that moment, and then realizing people were taking video to share with their friends for cheap thrills. It's horrifying to think about violence becoming viral, and popular at that.

It's reading stories like these that make me happy to live in a small community. Sure, violence occurs here, but maybe not as frequently or to the extent of a larger metropolis.

  1. I'm glad that we both did a blog on this story. I am going to keep a very close eye on it to hopefully see some results from the investigation. All these "animals" need to be brought to trial and sent to prison for the rest of their lives. I feel really bad for the girl and for the hell she will endure, probably for the rest of her life.
